Substation Parts & Field Services for Electric Cooperatives

A distribution cooperative, or the generation and transmission cooperative behind it, runs a lean engineering staff against a fleet paid for with member dollars. Neither has the appetite for a capital replacement on a piece of switchgear that still has service life left in it. A General Electric recloser, a Westinghouse voltage regulator, a Southern States GOAB switch, the equipment stays in the yard for decades, well past the point the manufacturer that built it stopped supporting the part. When one component finally wears past repair, the choice a co-op faces is a full-unit capital replacement or a shop willing to make the one part it actually needs. We machine that part to the original specification, or reverse-engineer it from the failed piece when no drawing survives, and our crews install it.

Replacement parts when the OEM stops making them

We manufacture replacement contacts and components for reclosers, voltage regulators, load tap changers, oil circuit breakers, and disconnect switches across the brands a cooperative's distribution fleet actually carries: General Electric, Westinghouse, McGraw-Edison, Allis-Chalmers, and Federal Pacific. Silver-to-silver contact surfaces, correct base metals, dimensions held to the OEM print, not a near-fit that overheats or hangs up on a call it can't complete.

For Southern States GOAB switches we handle full refurbishment start to finish, seized bearings, burned contacts, and obsolete linkage parts machined in-house, including the EV2 bearing upgrade: a stainless shaft, Viton O-rings, and sealed bearings that break the wear cycle that seized the original. We also build the UGOR universal gear operator, a drop-in replacement for a worn hand operator. It ends the maintenance-to-seizure cycle of a conventional operator, and because its slew drive resists back-drive under switch loads, it takes the handle-kickback hazard out of switching.

Field crews for territory that gets hit by storms

Not every job ships to Palm Harbor. Our field services division works co-op substations in place across Florida and the Southeast: switch and breaker repair, transformer processing, and load tap changer maintenance, run with our own Baron oil-processing rig for on-site vacuum dehydration and hot oil circulation, no drain required. When an oil sample needs a lab, it goes to a regional oil-testing laboratory in Tampa, with 24-hour turnaround available.

Cooperative territory tends to mean rural service areas and long feeders, and long feeders take the brunt of a storm. When a substation event will not wait for a scheduled outage, our emergency line runs 24/7, with same-day dispatch statewide in Florida, next-day dispatch to Georgia, and next-day to two-day dispatch across the rest of the Southeast.

Already through vendor qualification

Bringing on a new vendor as a cooperative usually means clearing a supply-chain or safety prequalification review before the first purchase order goes out. We have already passed it. Southern Switch is ISNetworld and Avetta approved, SAM registered, Buy American Act compliant, and Made in USA, with utilities as customers since 1982. For a co-op engineering staff, that means we clear most prequalification packets without a lengthy onboarding process, and it means when you call, an engineer answers the phone.
