Southern Switch & Contacts is headquartered in Palm Harbor, FL. Our field crews serve utilities, rural electric cooperatives, municipal systems, and industrial customers throughout Florida, from Pensacola to Miami, from the Panhandle to the Keys. We perform high-voltage testing on power transformers, circuit breakers, cables, and substation protection systems, and we provide emergency response coverage for unplanned outage events.

Florida's climate presents specific challenges for substation equipment, high ambient humidity accelerates moisture ingress in transformer insulation and bushing OIP systems, salt spray in coastal areas attacks outdoor equipment and connections, and the storm season creates extended periods of elevated loading that stress transformers and switchgear beyond nameplate ratings. Routine testing that catches problems before they become outages is not optional in this environment.

Transformer Testing

Our Florida field work spans investor-owned utilities, municipal systems, and rural cooperatives. We have worked with customers operating equipment at Florida Power & Light, Duke Energy Florida, Tampa Electric (TECO), Gulf Power, and Seminole Electric, as well as cooperatives including Clay Electric, Withlacoochee River Electric, Suwannee Valley Electric, Lee County Electric, and Florida Keys Electric. Municipal systems from Gainesville Regional Utilities and Lakeland Electric to the smaller municipal systems in Central Florida are part of our service footprint.

We cover all Florida markets: Tampa Bay, Orlando, Jacksonville, Miami/Fort Lauderdale, the Panhandle, Southwest Florida (Naples/Fort Myers), the Treasure Coast, and rural areas across North and Central Florida. Southern Switch & Contacts is a Florida Municipal Electric Association (FMEA) member and approved vendor, so municipal utilities can bring us in without a long qualification fight, and we hold the U.S. patent on the UGOR universal gear operator replacement used on GOAB switches statewide.

Transformer oil processing in Florida.

Florida's humidity is the dominant threat to transformer insulation. Moisture migrates from ambient air into transformer oil and from oil into the cellulose paper windings — slowly in normal operation, faster after a heavy storm cycle when the transformer runs hot and the oil expands and contracts repeatedly as load fluctuates. Oil dielectric strength and moisture content need to be tracked on every major unit. When readings show dielectric breakdown below acceptable limits or moisture above 20 ppm by ASTM D1533, oil processing with our vacuum dehydration rig restores the oil and begins pulling moisture from the paper. We perform transformer oil processing statewide, including on energized units where configuration permits.

Florida's solar buildout has added a second category of processing work: step-up transformers at utility-scale solar collector substations that are new from the factory but have sat on site through humid months before energization. New oil and new paper both absorb moisture, and a transformer that sat outside for six months before commissioning can fail a dielectric test before it ever sees load. Oil processing before commercial operation — scheduled alongside NETA acceptance testing — resolves the moisture condition and documents the transformer as ready.

Hurricane season and emergency response.

Florida's active weather season runs June through November and historically produces some combination of sustained high load, physical damage to substations, and accelerated equipment aging from overtemperature operation. Post-storm transformer failures and breaker events that require same-day or next-day assessment are a regular part of our Florida field calendar. We maintain 24-hour emergency contact and can dispatch to most Florida locations within four to eight hours from Palm Harbor. Post-fault work includes DGA oil sampling on units that have been through a fault event, contact inspection and resistance testing on breakers that have operated under fault current, and physical inspection of structure and connection integrity before re-energization.
