Old operators wear, seize, and back-drive
Gear operators on disconnect and air-break switches wear, seize, and back-drive. A worn operator loses positive control of the blades, a seized operator strands the switch in position, and back-drive lets the stored energy in a stiff switch push the operator off its stop. Replacing one the conventional way may mean adapting the new unit to the existing structure with field drilling, cutting, or welding, which adds crew hours and extends the outage. The UGOR removes that step.
Based on Southern Switch field experience, the universal mounting system fits roughly 95% of OEM bolt patterns, so most switches take a UGOR with no structural modification. It bolts to the structure already in place.

Gear ratio (36:1 or 62:1), downpipe adapter, and backplate are configured for your switch. The 3″ slewing drive is rated for 3,000 N·m (2,213 ft·lbf) of backwards holding torque, with a four-position positive lock and a reversible open-plate indicator.

The replacement, step by step
The sequence below is what a field replacement looks like. The full procedure, including stop-setting and commissioning, is in the installation instructions.
- Confirm fit: backplate bolt pattern, downpipe adapter size, and gear ratio are confirmed before the switch is touched.
- Remove the worn or seized operator from the existing mounting structure.
- Mount the UGOR to the existing structure with its universal backplate.
- Install the downpipe adapter and set the downpipe, trimming only after alignment is confirmed.
- Set the open and closed stops and the position indicator.
- Cycle the switch and verify open and closed operation.
