Solar & Renewable Substation Services

A utility-scale solar farm connects to the grid through a collector substation with the same equipment any transmission substation carries: step-up power transformers, medium-voltage switchgear, reclosers, LTCs, disconnect switches, and protection systems. That equipment needs NETA acceptance testing before commercial operation and ongoing maintenance after. We do both.

Acceptance testing before commercial operation

Most interconnection agreements and EPC contracts require NETA ATS-compliant acceptance testing before a solar facility can energize and begin delivering power. Our crews perform the full commissioning test scope on collector substation equipment: transformer turns ratio, winding resistance, insulation power factor and resistance, dissolved gas analysis on the initial oil fill, breaker contact timing and resistance, relay calibration verification, and protection system functional testing.

We mobilize from Palm Harbor, FL and work sites across Florida and the Southeast. ISNetworld and Avetta approved, which means we clear most utility and IPP vendor qualification processes without a lengthy onboarding fight.

Transformer processing for solar step-up units

New large power transformers sometimes arrive from the factory with elevated moisture content after extended storage or ocean shipping. Others develop moisture problems in the first operating season if the conservator or breather system is not set up correctly on commissioning. Before a new unit goes into service, an oil sample tells you what you are dealing with. If dielectric or moisture readings are off, we can process the oil on site before energization rather than after a problem develops.

Our Baron vacuum dehydration and hot oil circulation unit runs on-site, processes the oil in place without a drain, and brings moisture and dielectric readings to specification before the transformer is energized. For solar developers facing a hard commercial operation deadline, this is faster and less risky than waiting for a factory warranty claim.

Ongoing maintenance after commercial operation date

Collector substations at utility-scale solar farms are not unmaintained — they are just often treated that way until something fails. The interconnection agreement specifies equipment maintenance requirements, and the transformer warranty typically requires oil samples at defined intervals. A missed maintenance cycle on the step-up transformer is a warranty exposure and, more practically, a production loss risk during peak output season.

We provide annual and interval-based maintenance testing on solar collector substations: transformer oil sampling and analysis, tap changer inspection and contact maintenance, breaker timing and contact resistance, thermal imaging of connections, and battery and DC system checks on the protection panels. Scheduled work comes with a written report and recommendations. Emergency response is available 24/7 when a substation event threatens curtailment.

We work directly with investor-owned utilities managing their own solar generation assets, independent power producers operating utility-scale facilities, and EPC contractors who need a NETA-qualified substation testing subcontractor to complete the commissioning scope before commercial operation. We also supply machined replacement parts — contacts, LTC components, switch assemblies — when a solar facility's collector substation equipment needs a repair that the original manufacturer no longer supports.
