A plant, a processing facility, or a large commercial site that owns its own medium-voltage substation and switchgear does not have a utility engineering department behind it. It has whoever is on shift when the one breaker that feeds the process fails to close. The gear is often original to the facility: an oil circuit breaker, a drawout air breaker like an ITE K-series or a GE AKR, running well past the point the manufacturer stopped supporting it, with no spares on the shelf and no OEM to call. We machine the part that gets that breaker back in service, or reverse-engineer it from the failed piece when no drawing survives, and our crews install it.

When the one breaker fails, production stops

An industrial facility found that out directly. Its 4160V breaker would not close, and operations were down. Southern Switch responded same day, opened the mechanism, and traced the fault to a broken split pin on the operating linkage, the mechanism was cycling but the contacts weren’t following. We repaired it on-site and had them back online the same day. A plant substation doesn’t get a maintenance window when the one breaker holding up the line fails. It gets an engineer who shows up and knows where to look.

Parts and shop rebuilds for switchgear the OEM walked away from

We manufacture replacement contacts and components for oil circuit breakers, drawout air breakers, load tap changers, and disconnect switches across the brands still running in industrial and commercial yards: General Electric, Westinghouse, ITE, Siemens, Allis-Chalmers, Federal Pacific, and McGraw-Edison. Silver-to-silver contact surfaces, correct base metals, dimensions held to the OEM print, not a near-fit that overheats under load. When a breaker needs more than a part, our shop performs full remanufacture, teardown, contact and mechanism reconditioning, testing before and after, documented in a full test report with a one-year parts-and-labor warranty.

When the part is discontinued and no drawing exists, we reverse-engineer it from the failed component. A cast operating-mechanism part on a Siemens SF6 breaker fractured in service with no OEM replacement available. We reverse-engineered it from the broken casting, machined a stronger replacement from solid billet instead of casting it, and our crew installed it on-site, turnkey in under three weeks from failure to power back on. We do the same for parts that have nothing to do with a breaker: when a transformer CT secondary wiring passthrough block cracks and no OEM source exists, we machine a replacement from G-10 fiberglass laminate to the sample, on a two-day turnaround for standard sizes.

Testing on a schedule, not just when something trips

A facility running its own substation without an in-house spares program cannot afford to find out about a degrading breaker or a weak battery string at the moment it fails. Our field crews run NETA-aligned testing on a maintenance contract cadence: infrared thermography surveys of energized gear, circuit breaker testing, cable testing, and battery and DC system testing, each visit delivered as a written report with findings ranked by severity and trended against the last visit. When an oil sample needs a lab, it goes to a regional oil-testing laboratory in Tampa, with 24-hour turnaround available when a decision can’t wait on the mail.

We also handle the physical work in the substation: switch and breaker repair, bus and connection repair, and transformer processing on our Baron vacuum dehydration and hot oil circulation rig, dries and de-gasses the oil on site with the transformer de-energized and drained.
