About the Waukesha UZD Load Tap Changer

The Waukesha UZD is a diverter-switch type load tap changer produced by Waukesha Electric Systems and found in Waukesha and SPX transformer nameplate units across utility distribution and power transformer fleets. Its selector switch, reversing switch, roller arcing contact, drive shaft, and current collector assembly work together to pre-select and execute each tap change under load. The roller arcing contact is the component most subject to erosion from interrupting duty. When the roller surface wears, arc interruption becomes inconsistent and overheating at the contact interface can progress to diverter switch failure.
