2024 · Electrical erection subcontractor to Sundt
Two-Bank 69 kV Substation, MacDill Generating Plant
As electrical erection subcontractor to Sundt, Southern Switch built out a two-bank 69 kV substation on the MacDill footprint, serving a dedicated on-site generating plant. Scope across two phases: 12 steel structures, two 69 kV switch sets with motor operators, two 72.5 kV circuit breakers, three potential transformers, and the associated shielding cable, post insulators, bus, and conduit. Sundt held the prime contract; TECO built out the two power transformer banks. Work performed on an active MacDill site in 2024.
2023 · Field Services subcontractor to Tampa Electric Company (TECO)
TECO Transformer Elevation and Substation Hardening
TECO retained Southern Switch as field services subcontractor for a hurricane-hardening project at two TECO-owned substations in the Tampa Bay area. Scope: crane coordination, lift and set of 4 power transformers onto elevated concrete and steel-I-beam platforms, and full transformer apparatus testing (TTR, Doble power factor, winding resistance, insulation resistance, excitation current, oil sampling) prior to return to service. TECO held the prime contract, owned the equipment, and performed final commissioning; Southern Switch served as field contractor for the transformer scope.

Southern Switch also manufactures precision switch and load-tap-changer contacts in service at Duke Energy, Florida Power & Light (FPL), Baltimore Gas & Electric (BG&E), Dominion Energy, ComEd, ConEd, and Entergy, and has served as a field contractor on utility substation projects across the Southeast.
